Charlie Peace: burglar, murderer and master of disguise
In my previous newsletter I shared the shocking murder of PC Nicholas Cock in 1876 in Manchester, which had an astonishing twist. Although labourer William Habron was convicted of the police officer’s murder, notorious criminal Charles Peace later confessed that he was the killer. I’ve ‘encountered’ Charlie many times in my work – he was an inveterate burglar and a double murderer, who enjoyed papercraft and music. Here’s his rather unique story:
