Warning: infant murder
When the tiny victims of Victorian baby farmer Amelia Dyer were discovered in the Thames at Caversham Lock in 1896, the local residents were so shocked that they carved crosses into the handrail of the wooden footbridge crossing the river. The bridge has been long replaced and now there is no memorial to the innocent infants who perished at her hands. When researching true crime cases, it’s easy to overlook the victims in the hunt for the salacious details, and so I’ve been uncovering the stories of the mothers and children whose lives were shattered by Dyer’s callous acts of murder.
