Growing up in Manchester, I regularly visited the Lancashire countryside with my family on days out hiking, and I first explored Lancaster while staying at my parents’ caravan near Pendle. So I was delighted when my son accepted a place at Lancaster University (to study astrophysics, not history!) and now I have an excuse to visit the city more regularly. When I’m there, I always like to drop into Lancaster Castle. The magnificent and rather forbidding (especially in the rain!) building has dominated Lancaster for more than 900 years. First established in 1093, it has a dark and fascinating past, with links to witchcraft and an excellent police museum which includes displays on infamous murderers Charlie Peace and Dr Buck Ruxton.
